Summer solstice, also called midsummer, is the time when the earth has gathered as much daylight as she’s going to get this year. In terms of daylight, it’s the longest day of the year. This mirrors the effect of a full moon, since like a full moon, from here until the next solstice, in December, we will have a little bit less light – only, instead of light reflected off the sun, this light is our daylight. Symbolically, it represents a gradual process of focusing inwards, or processing what we experienced during the peak growth period of the year. Astrologically, what are the areas of our lives on which we’d do best to reflect?
Looking at a “birth” chart for the date of this year’s summer solstice, almost all of the planets are clustered in one half of the chart – the upper half, the part that represents our conscious awareness, while at the same time, all of the signs those planets are in are from the lower half of zodiac and represent our more instinctual, reactionary tendencies. At the same time, there is one outlier – the south node in Scorpio, forming a “handle” to the “bucket” of the planets above.
The south node means our old ways of being, the baggage we carry through this life, and also, the skills we have already mastered. The sign of Scorpio represents the need to gain a deeper understanding, to process, digest, and release that which no longer serves us, allowing this to be transformed into what now will. In support of this, Uranus conjunct the North node and in the sign of Taurus shows us that this process of release and transformation is the path to our once again feeling free and secure. The square with Saturn in Aquarius shows us that we must use our need for structure to ensure that the changes we make are deliberate, ethical, and made real, not just talked of. And finally Jupiter aligning with the Moon, Mars and Chiron show us that we must take action to heal, but using the highest principles.
